The are filmed in England (Leavesdon Studios is where a lot of it is filmed) and parts in Scotland. The parts that are film in Scotland are places like Hagrid's Hut and Hogwarts.
Some scenes were filmed in London (Gringotts, some school scenes filmed there) including Kings Cross which was used as stated in the book itself.
Goathland railway station in North Yorkshire was a principal filming place.
Alnwick Castle in Northumberland and Gloucester Cathedral were the main settings for Hogwarts in the first few movies.
Auditions for the Harry Potter movies were held in England. The majority of the roles were not cast through open auditions, especially the adult cast. Ron, Hermione, Luna and Lavender were some of the characters to be cast through open auditions.
J.K. Rowling sold the rights on the condition that all of the cast be either British or Irish, where all of the characters were from. Only characters with a different nationality, such as Fleur Delacour, could be played by non British or Irish actors.
There is no Harry Potter musical. In May 2014 it was reported that J.K. Rowling and Warner Brothers were in talks to create a play that would be a prequel to the main series.
No information about auditions has been released.
Scenes from the Harry Potter films are shot in various locations in Britain. For example, scenes that involve Hogwarts school are shot in a castle in Northumberland, North England.
Also, the Ministry of Magic, Grimmauld Place and Platform nine and three quarters (9 3/4) are all shot in London, England.
Most of the filming was done in Leavesden Studios, which is located in Watford just outside of London. It's one of the few places in Britain where large scale films can be produced.
On location filming happened in a number of places. Many were done in Scotland, which Rowling has agreed is the location of Hogwarts. Places include:
The West Highland Line, Scotland - this railway line passes through some of the most famous scenery in Scotland.
Alnwick Castle, Nothumberland - located up in a small town in the far northeast of England, this is one of the largest surviving castles in the UK. This is where the flying lesson is filmed, and numerous exterior shots, including the scene where the flying car crashes.
Goathland Station, North Yorkshire - used for Hogsmeade Station.
Gloucester Cathedral - the cloisters were used for the courtyards of Hogwarts.
Bodeleian Library, Oxford - a number of school scenes, and the hospital wing
Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford - including the Great Hall of Hogwarts.
Harrow School, London - Professor Flitwick's classroom.
Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire - a 13th century Abbey used for many shots of Hogwarts.
Chapter House, Durham Cathedral - Professor McGonagall's classroom.
Black Park, Iver, Buckinghamshire - Hagrid's Hut and the Forbidden Forest.
12 Picket Post Close, Bracknell, Berkshire - this ordinary, privately-owned suburban house is located on the outskirts of Bracknell and is used for 4 Privet Drive.
Leadenhall Market, London - the street outside the Leaky Cauldron.
London Zoo - the place where Harry sets a snake free. This is the actual location mentioned in the book.
Australia House, London - Gringotts
Lincoln's Inn Fields, London - Grimmauld Place
Blennheim Palace, Oxfordshire - Snape's memory as a student of Hogwarts
Millenium Bridge, London - destroyed by Death Eaters
Hampstead, London - Hermione's parents' house
Piccadilly Circus, London - the café attack scene
Malham Cove, North Yorkshire - a natural limestone location. One place where Harry and Hermione travel to
Leavanham, Suffolk - Godric's Hollow
Rothenburg, Bavaria, Germany - where Grindelwald steals the wand
Pembrokeshire, Wales - Shell Cottage
King's Cross and St. Pancras Stations - where Harry catches the Hogwarts Express from "Platform 9 3/4".
In actual fact, Platforms 9 and 10 of King's Cross are not separated by a metal barrier (as described in book) or by archways (as seen in the film) but by railway tracks. Rowling used some artistic licence here. The film uses Platforms 4 and 5 of King's Cross instead - the only platforms at the station which are separated by archways. King's Cross is the correct station for trains heading to Scotland.
