From the name of a world-traveling admiralcomes the name of the bougainvillea.

Specifically, Louis-Antoine, comte de Bougainville (1729-1811) is the first Frenchman known to have circumnavigated the world. He was assiduous in collecting wildlife samples en route. He was honored for his world-traveling achievements and collections by having the plant's genus selected in his honor.

The first Europeans known to have seen the plant nevertheless may have been the count's botanist, Philibert Commerçon (1727-1773) and the botanist's assistant and lover, Jeanne Baret (1740-1807). Jeanne therefore may have been the first woman known to have circumnavigated Earth.
