Factories often hired women and children because they would work for cheaper. Not only that, but children could work long hours. Many children also worked as newboys or did ran errands for shops.

If you chose not to work someone would take your place. You worked over 12 hours and maybe got 2 hours of sleep. There was no law to control this mistreatment. Workers would work in hot weather w/o ac in factory and could die of heat stroke. They where very dirty and under-cared for.
Men and women would sleep separately and their bedrooms would be on opposite sides of the house. Usually women and children would be upstairs along with the gynaikon(the women's gathering room) while men would sleep down stairs.
