from chickens In most birds and reptiles, an egg is the zygote – a cell that is the result of fertilization. That is, two haploid cells — usually an ovum from a female and a sperm cell from a male — merge into a single diploid cell called the zygote. To enable incubation the egg is usually kept within a favourable temperature range as it nourishes and protects the growing embryo. When the embryo is adequately developed it breaks out of the egg in the process of hatching.

This is a bit of a leading question - assuming that the egg was already there and that it was a chicken egg to begin with; then you forced the following answer: it came from a chicken. However, since you offered neither of these tidbits of info - there will be no way to answer your question without insulting the age old conundrum of "which came first; the chicken or the egg?".

The domestic chicken most likely originated in the far east, possibly in modern-day Vietnam, and spread west via the Persian empire. Naturally this is where the eating of chicken eggs comes from. However, mankind has been ovivorous (egg-eating) since prehistoric times.

This originates with various pagan customs practiced in some ancient cultures in the spring. Some of these customs are connected to the time of the vernal equinox because this is the beginning of longer daylight periodsthan nights. The egg symbolizes fecundity and the idea of rebirth after the winter season. The connection with resurrection followed naturally. The very word Easter derives from the pagan goddess Ishtar, whose cults considered the spring to be sacred to her devotion.
