Where did the expression 'open up a can of whoop butt' come from?

It is an old southern/midwestern phrase made famous by Roy D. Mercer, a radio personality, who would prank call people (at another listener's request) at their workplace acting like he was upset with a product or service. He would pretend to become so riled that he would threaten to "open a can of Whoop Butt" on them. Roy would always reveal that it was a prank at the end and let the pranked know who asked him to call. It may sound horrible but the pranked person always ended up being as amused as the listeners.
