If you think about it, the first 'immigrants' to the geography called the United States of America, you could say that Christopher Columbus's crews were the first immigrants -- per se -- and their work was survival.

If you go back even further, you could say that the people who walked across the Bering Straits land bridge were the first 'immigrants', and again, their work was survival.

In modern times, regardless of the geography, all immigrants usually take whatever work they can get -- to survive. Unless the immigrants immigrate to a country that accepts them based on their financial health.
