Some people think Greece but that's not right. the Maccabees/jews in Egypt were being hellenized (taken over by greek rulers) and people started to change into greek custom, like wearing greek clothes and performing their practices, which were unfaithful to god. the jews revolted because they thought it was better to die than to be unfaithful to god. against all odds, their revolt was a success.
