turtle pie came from an old restaurant chain called "the velvet turtle", it was an old school steakhouse that mostly catered to older people, lots of prime rib, beef wellington, Cesar salads made table side (also, for those who don't know Cesar is the correct spelling for the salad--it is named after a Mexican hotel and restaurant owner in tijuana that invented it some forty or so years ago NOT after a roman ceasar, or ceaser, or Caesar, or Caesar, all of which I've seen mis spelled and mis represented on various menus over the years) etc...
so their signature dessert was a pie with pecan/praline ice cream and a caramel topping...i was a busboy for them in the 80's. they also claimed (this I'm not sure of) to have originated serving chilled forks with salads...we kept them in the freezer right next to the ice cream
