John Smith founded the Virginia colony. Smith was a man who was part of the Virginia Company. This company was given a charter by the King. The goal of this colony was to find gold, and establish a settlement.

In these southern colonies, the climate was wet. In order to grow get gold/money, the colony had to strive for better tobacco crops. That is where Smith came in. He said, " No work, no shelter or food.'

As you can see, John Smith was a wonderful man who made Virginia what it is now!
