Gold Prospectors
Gold miners could be called prospectors. Some prospectors who sought their fortunes during the California gold rush were called 49ers. (That gold rush began in 1848, but was really roaring in 1849, hence the nickname for those prospectors.)

Many gold prospectors mined by placing a pie pan shaped dish in a stream and gathering some of the sand and a little water. Then they would slowly swirl the dish letting the water fall out. If they found gold, they staked a claim and built a mine by cutting into nearby rocks, digging caves to find more gold.

Gold Prospectors
At this stage, there weren't many prospectors as people were not encouraged to find gold. Any gold that was found was supposed to be given to the government. However, prospectors tended to look for gold in mounatinous areas, such as through the Blue Mountains and the high country of southern New South Wales.
The Australian gold rush started in 1851 when Hargraves discovered gold in New South Wales. Before this, most prospectors were traveling to California in the United States.
