What was the relationship of the army 34th division and V corps in World War 2?

None. The 34th "Red Bull" Infantry Division served in North Africa and all during the Italian Campaign. They were first attached to the II Corps and later to the IV and maybe VI Corps. The V Corps took part in the D-Day landings at Normandy. They were part of the 1st Army for awhile, then the 3rd Army and finally the 7th Army. However the 5th Army did serve in Italy and the 34th Infantry Division served under its command.

First American soldiers come to Britain?

The 34th "Red Bull" Infantry Division was one of the earliest units to arrive in England. Also the 1st Armored Division arrived there and transitioned to the newer Sherman tanks. Both of these units were the first to be sent into combat in North Africa. The 1st Infantry Division arrived early in UK, I believe.Since the 34th Division fought continually in N. Africa, and Italy, it accrued more time in combat then the 1st Infantry Division, which was taken out of combat for training in preparation of the D-Day landings.Custermen

How can a WWll soldier have both a Red Bull Patch AND a Blue Devil patch on his uniform when his discharge papers only state he was a member of the 34th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop?

The 34th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop was an organic unit to the 34th Infantry Division, the Red Bulls. The 34th Inf. Div. & the 88th Inf. Div., the Blue Devils, were divisions that served in Italy together in 1944-45. The veteran was probably a member of the 88th first, so that patch is on the right sleeve. Since the 34th Cav. Recon. Trp. was listed on the discharge document, that means he was a member of that unit last. Therefore, he would have the 34th Inf. Div. patch on his left sleeve. As to why he would of went from one unit to the other, most of the time it was because the veteran was wounded or ill. When he recovered, he did not necessarily go back to his original unit. Richard V. Horrell WW 2 Connections.com the patch on the right shoulder is the unit that a man 1st sees combat with. the one on the left is for the unit that he is currently assigned to. if you see combat with a unit and remain assigned to it you can wear that patch on both shoulders.
