The twin towers were the highest buildings but not for long. When the were still standing from 1998-2004 the were the highest building.

The Empire State building as of now (2013) is back to being the tallest building of New York. The World Trade Center was the tallest before the tragic events of September 11th. The Bank of America building is now second on the tallest list.
