∙ 13y agoLatte means milk in Italian. If you were to order a latte in Italy you would get a puzzled look and a glass of milk. Here in the states it's become sort of an offshoot of the cappuccino. While a cappuccino is espresso, steamed milk, and frothed milk; a latte is espresso and steamed milk.
Urban legend has it that an Italian barista in Berkeley came up with the "caffe latte" when customers said his cappuccino was too hard, so he made it with more milk, and thus the latte was born. Now there are many variations on the latte including flavors and even lattes made with bases other than espresso. When someone walks into my coffee shop and asks what's the difference I generally tell them very little except for the frothed milk on a cappuccino.
