Spanish means 'of Spain'. Although in the US, Latino people are often referred to as 'Spanish', they obviously hail from Mexico and the nations of Central and South America. Their distant colonial ancestors may have been Spanish, though today's Latino's have only partial descent from them, since they also have South American Indian blood as well. 'Spain' is a vernacular of the old word Hispana, which the country was originally known as due to the fact that it was inhabited by the Iberian Hispa people. Why they were called Hispa is now lost to knowledge, though the term still survives in the word 'Hispanic', to describe the Latin American peoples.
