The name "Emmy" was decided in 1948. Academy founder Syd Cassyd originally suggested "Ike", based on the television iconoscope tube. However, "Ike" also referred to the popular World War II hero Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower, and other Academy members wanted something unique. Eventually, the name "Immy" was suggested by television engineer and the third academy president Harry Lubcke. "Immy", refers to the image orthicon tube used in the early cameras. After "Immy" was chosen, it was later feminized to Emmy to match their female statuette.

One of the original names proposed for what we now know as the Emmy was actually "Ike" -- for the televisioniconoscopetube. But, understandably, with Eisenhower so prominent at the time, most felt the country didn't have room for two of them. The alternative they came up with was "Immy" -- the common reference used for the image orthicon camera. That name stuck, but was later modified to Emmy, which Academy members thought would be appropriate for the female symbol.

The name "Emmy" was chosen as a feminization of "immy", a nickname used for the image orthicon tubes that were common in early television cameras. To complement the name, the statuette was designed to depict a winged woman holding an atom, which has since become the symbol of the TV Academies' goal of supporting and uplifting the art and science of television: The wings represent the muse of art; the atom the electron of science.

The name Emmy is a feminization of 'Immy', a term commonly used for the early image orthicon camera tube. The statue was designed by Louis McManus, an engineer at Culver City's Cascade Pictures. He used his wife, Dorothy, as his model.
