"Waste" has never any use. Nuclear waste is stored in facilities in the hope that someday, someone will figure out how to deal with it.

if the US did make 32000 nuclear weapons (it did not) they all can be dismantled and put into civillian nuclear reactors, where the fission process converts the plutonium into other (slightly weird) by producucts. If you are wondering about the amount of waste made by the original breeder reactors, just as much as a normal reactor.

Nuclear waste can not case an explosion is it's spent form. Once a reactor is done with Uranium rods as fuel they are put into lead lined containers and transported to spent fuel storage. A nuclear reactor can explode from hydrogen build up in the containment vessel, this is due to the reaction going on in the steam generation process, this does not happen in nuclear waste storage facilities.

First off, taking all nuclear waste products and putting it in a rocket and shooting it toward the sun so then it would burn up could cause problems with out atmosphere. The way the nuclear waste products are handled now is what has been studied and found to be the best possible disposal of the waste products without causing further damage to the people, surrounding areas, and the atmosphere.

A problem is that the pools are becoming overcrowded and people need to fine a permanent storage instead of a temporary one..They found a place in Yucca Mountain a while back ago and i dont know what has happened since but it was supposed to be 1500 feet underground (personally i think thats not enough). A lot of questions have come up though. One of them being if the waste can be shot into space. I think we've messed up Earth enough so why mess up space?
