The giant moray eel (Gymnothorax javanicus), the largest of the moray eel species, is found in numerous places around the world. Giant moray eels are found in tropical and temperate seas across the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa, to the Pitcairn group, north to the Ryukyu and Hawaiian islands, and south to Polynesia. They are more likely to be found in shallower waters such as lagoons, reefs and estuarine areas, although there is little to suggest they do not inhabit deeper waters. They are found in tropical and temperate seas.
The moray eel is considered as the second most beautiful eel. They are beautifully colored eels with designs on them. They are as large as 10 feet in length. Moray eels can be spotted in tropical or sub tropical regions. You can spot Moray eels in the Atlantic near New Jersey right up till Brazil. You can also spot them in the Indo-Pacific. The moray eels usually live in water that is as deep as fifty feet, so you could say they live in relatively shallow water. Often scuba divers spot these eels when diving in the tropical or sub tropical seas.
They are very timid and usually do not attack unless for some reason you upset their territory or they mistake you for food due to their poor vision. These eels maybe timid looking but they are very strong. They have a large mouth and are capable of inflicting a lot of pain on their enemies. In fact they are supposed to be even more dangerous than lobsters or octopuses. If you have seen a moray eel its hard to believe that they could inflict any pain at all but if you see them open their mouth, it wont be all that hard to believe. Most of the Moray eels are big, they grow up to about 5 feet but should you go to the Pacific you will be able to spot moral eels that are approximately 10 to 11 feet long.
However in Hawaii the moray eels sported are barely 3 feet long. They are magnificent looking creatures with distinct markings and vibrant colors. They have very snake like movements. The Moray eels make their home at the bottom of the sea. They like a rock habitat and hence it is extremely common to find them in the crevices of rocks at the bottom of the sea.
Electric eels live in fresh waters of the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers, the basins in South America, in river floodplains, swamps, creeks and coastal plains. They often live on muddy bottoms in calm water and in stagnant rivers.
Dragon Moray eels live in the water but in several different areas. They live in the waters of Japan, Hawaii, the Indo-Pacific region, and central Polynesia.
