Veterinarians work in the same manner most other medical professionals do - they examine a patient, determine what diagnostic tests need to be performed, analyse the results, make a determination about the diagnosis and start treatment.
Veterinarians typically examine, diagnose and treat domesticated mammals and some other pets to improve their health. However, not all vets treat pets - some work in research, some teach, some are involved in public health activities like inspecting meat and tracing outbreaks and some are in the military and do all of the above depending upon the duty station.
Veterinarians tend to make loose collaborative networks among themselves, so they can call each other up (or email, text or otherwise reach out) when they have a difficult case or need a second opinion.
