Baby animals go quick to find a home but because nobody wants a dog that will die in like a year or so the older animals( 7 and up) are being put down. so only about 14 older pets get adopted in the adverage animal shelter get adopted each day most of the time its less.

If they are at a no kill shelter, they will stay there until they are adopted. Some may go live with a foster family to free up space at the shelter. But, If it is a shelter where they put animals to sleep, they will be killed if they are not adopted after a certain amount of time. That amount of time varies depending on the policies of the given shelter. For some lucky cats at these "kill" shelters, sometimes a no kill shelter will come in and take them to their facility.
