Most research stations in Antarctica are located where water allows access by ship during the summer season. Notable exceptions are the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and Vostok. Pole is serviced by USA military aircraft; Vostok is serviced by cross-country motor vehicles from the Mirny Station, which is near water. Vostok has also been serviced by USA military aircraft.

As well, summer field camps are located far inland, and are serviced by helicopter.
