They're able to shut half of their bodies down by shutting down one eye and the associated side of the brain, and keeping open the other eye and keeping going the other side of the brain. They're safest doing their 50% shutdown when they're hidden safely away in crevices from predators, and when they're traveling groupies in pods of 10-100.
