Most of them spend the night at home, where they setup "altars for the dead" (Spanish: altar de muertos) decorated with food, toys and candies liked by the deceased; also sugar and chocolate skulls, special bread for the season (a sweet roll, known as pan de muerto or bread of the dead), Mexican marigold flowers, perforated paper and candles decorate the altars.

Some people in very specific regions such as Oaxaca setup these altars atop the graves of the deceased, spending the night in the cemeteries.
