'Rocky Mountains' is a translation of the Cree name, 'as-sin-wati.' Seen from the east across the prairies, they appear as a great rocky mass. The first mention of their present name is to be found in Legardeur St. Pierre's journal for 1752, which refers to the 'Montaignes de Roche.'

==========

Actually, the first European to reach these mountains was the Spaniard Francisco Vázquez de Coronado in 1540. He called them 'Montañas Rocallosas'. In Spanish, 'rocalla' means 'conglomerate of pebbles' (small stones worn smooth by water erosion). The correct translation of 'Montañas Rocallosas' would have been 'Pebbly Mountains' but they were called 'Rocky Mountains' in English (or 'Montagnes Rocheuses' in French), which is close enough. From 'Rocky Mountains', it came back to Spanish as 'Montañas Rocosas', which is the name most used in Spain today. However, they are still called by their original name, 'Montañas Rocallosas', in most of Latin America.

In Catalan, they are called 'Muntanyes Rocalloses', ('Pebbly Mountains') a literal translation of the original name. In most other languages, however, they use a translation of the English name, 'Rocky Mountains'.
