Most labs breed their own lines so that they can keep a consistent gene pool for their studies. In doing this, there is no extraneous variable with a different line of animal. If they do not breed their own, then specialized breeding facilities keep the labs stocked. Labs do not, most of the time, buy their animals from regular pet stores and such because they are more prone to disease and they are of various gene pools.
