What is the convention? This question seems to have no answer as there are conventions. Multiples and, perhaps, non-singulars which define the "form" from say, novels and Novellas. A short story can be an event, where novels aer a series of events. Short Stories appear to be set in one time where novels span days, months, years, even decades. So, therefore, two conventions appear to be true: 1. Singular event 2. Singular time Having looked at these, it appears then short stories are singular in their conventions. Single character, single plot, single time and single event in a single chapter...

Well like today people gather around campfires and tell stories over and over again. Now a days a lot of use books but back then campfire stories were a lot like books. Those stories were used to explain what man can not explain. That is how the Greek Gods came to be, a ton of myths from a really great story teller. So myths come from back before christ when like today curios story tellers tell those willing to hear stories about things they can not explain. Only the most famous ones are still in use today.
