A volcano is a break in the Earth that lets the very hot, gooey and sometimes runny liquid rock known as magma escape onto the surface as lava.
Volcanoes are made where hot molten rock (known as magma) builds up under the ground. This can happen where the heavy rocks that make the ocean floor sink under the lighter rocks that make the continents which we stand on.
As the heavy ocean floor rocks sink into the Earth, they get hotter and hotter and begin to melt. The hot molten rock then begins to rise to the surface. The melted rock tries to push through gaps in the solid rock but this is difficult. This causes a build up of pressure (a lot like what happens if you shake a bottle of cola and the fizz has nowhere to go because the lid is on) and when this pressure gets too high, it pushes the melted rock out onto the surface as a volcanic eruption (a bit like what would happen if you took the lid off that fizzy bottle of cola, releasing the pressure and letting it spray out of the top).
This can also happen where the rocks that make the Earth's hard skin or crust are being stretched. This makes them thinner and lets the hot molten rock get closer to the surface making it easier for the molten rock to escape in an eruption. This can be seen in places like Iceland which was built by the volcanic eruptions that happen where the crust is being stretched.
When the melted rock that is pushed out onto the Earth's surface cools, it turns back into hard solid rock and begins to make a mound around the hole it was pushed out of (known as a volcanic vent). Every time a new eruption happens, new melted rock is pushed out of the hole and new layers are added to the mound which builds up to form a volcano.
