Oil was formed from the remains of animals and plants (diatoms) that lived millions of years ago in a marine (water) environment before the dinosaurs. Over millions of years, the remains of these animals and plants were covered by layers of sand and silt. Heat and pressure from these layers helped the remains turn into what we today call crude oil. The word "petroleum" means "rock oil" or "oil from the earth."

I THINK petroleum

You're thinking on the right track, but in reverse. Petroleum is a product made from crude oil, not the other way around. Crude oil is made from extinct biomass, that is plants and animals that lived millions of years ago, subjected to underground pressure over a long period of time until the oil is all that is left of them.

Lots of crude oil comes from under sea, as you might have heard on the news about the U.S.A oil slick, which is causing most sea creatures to die

Crude oil is found in the ground and is taken straight out of it. Crude oil is formed from organic remains that has been in the ground for a period of time.

Same thing it's always been made from fossillised animals and plant matter.
