You can buy boats at the Shipbuilders at Dragon Cove. You will need enough money for it, but your old ship is worth a bit in trade.
You can get a loan at Golden Harbor, but be sure that you can repay it because you can't buy a bigger ship until any late loans are paid off.

∙ 12y agoGo to the Shipbuilders at Dragon Cove. You can see what each new ship will cost you (there is some trade-in value on the old one). Generally, you would buy each larger ship as you can afford it, leaving enough cash to buy trading goods. Each larger ship will allow you to get more doubloons and salvage.
(The cargo master is at Bouffant Bay and hiring him gives you more cargo space in any ship.)
You can borrow up to your entire net worth at the Golden Harbor Bank. This lets you get bigger ships faster, and you can repay one loan and then get a larger loan. Your final loan, one to buy the Phoenix Warbird, does not have to be paid back.
