It's a little tricky, but I just found the answer to this on the Nissan Frontier forums. There is a dipstick, but it's down lower on the passenger side of the engine. It's small, and it's held down by a 10mm bolt. You need to remove the bolt in order to pull the dipstick.
If you're going to do a drain/fill, that is where you would put the new J/S-matic fluid. You would need a funnel with a really small outlet.

My 2001 Nissan frontier 3.3 v6 engine is overheating. I changed the thermostat but it still overheats.
If it's automatic, facing the engine, it is a gray pull stick on the left side of the engine close to the firewall and valve cover.

check with your local Nissan dealer,,on the 1999 they were recalled,,I had a 1999 frontier,and they repalced it for nothing,,,
The AT check signal light means that there is something is wrong with the transmission. A slipping transmission can be the cause of this.
