The PS3 was designed to be able to have a standard laptop size harddrive and meant to allow upgrading. The only reason to upgrade a hard drive is for more storage space and/or a higher quality harddrive. That is the reason to upgrade any harddrive
If you want to do your own harddrive recovery, you will need proper software to do it. Go online and download harddrive recovery software and try that. Hopefully, it will not need to be replaced.
