The rate of encountering a Shiny Pokemon is slim. The approximate rate is 1/8192, but it can be decreased to roughly 1/42 through chaining. Chaining means to encounter the same species of Pokemon repeatedly by using the PokeRadar you received from Prof. Rowan after unlocking the National Dex. It can be random on what number of Pokemon you encounter before finding a shiny, but it is commonly found at around a chain of 40 or higher. The number sounds simple, but it is a difficult task to encounter the same Pokemon for more than 40 times and requires a lot of patience.

Another method of finding shinies is the Masuda Method. This decreases the rate from 1/8192 down to 1/1638, but requires breeding consistently. You have to get two Pokemon that are from different countries and put them in the Day-Care. With enough egg hatching, you may find yourself a shiny Pokemon.
