Well first craft a pickaxe of any sort, then find some coal. You can find coal on exposed stone at the surface, however to get lots of coal, you must dig underground a bit.
If you can't find any at first, go get some logs, then bake them in a furnace. This will produce charcoal, which has the same same texture as coal, and is used the same way.
In minecraft you can get coal anywhere under the surface just dig around with a pickaxe and you will find some. Also the requirements to mine coal you just have to have a wooden or higher pickaxe and once again coal is found just about everywhere underground from three blocks under the surface to 60 blocks under.
There are two types of coal and charcoal Coal: coal is a common material found underground
Charcoal: Charcoal can be made by smelting trees
It is usually hidden in the mountains ive always dug there. Sometimes I can see it on the side of the mountain it looks like a regular stone brick with tiny black squares in it.
Cook it in a furnace using wood, coal or charcoal.
Just search underground and on cliffs. It can be found almost anywhere. It is basically stone with little black specks on it.
