There is a gold belt that runs down the middle of the state. Gold has been found in quite a few of the rivers, but getting access to the rivers is the challenge since not all have public access. Contrary creek near Lake Anna is a popular destination as are the Rappahanok and Rapidan Rivers. I have heard of people panning in the James as well. Most of the gold in Virginia is fines but the old timers left a few nuggets behind. Keep your pans wet.
