Hi mate had same problem a few months ago. It is located behind front near side (Where_do_you_put_the_gearbox_fluid_in_a_vw_golf_mk4) wheel trim on the side of the gear box. It is a round plug with a quite large alen key fitting. You have to put the car on axel stands on level ground. Remove the n/s wheel and plastic wheel arch liner to see the gear box filling plug. Remove the plug with an alen key (maybe 8 or 10mm) and fill with gearbox oil until it is level with bottom threads of the plug (do not overfil).

Has your gearbox lost all of it's oil? are the gears noisey or whirring at Where_do_you_put_the_gearbox_fluid_in_a_vw_golf_mk4? Is your clutch slipping? cos it could be that you have a hole in your gearbox (very common problem on mk4's ) If it has done more than 60k and your gearbox number starts DUU or DUW (can be located on white sticker near spare wheel or top of gearbox behind green/black inspection plug) then i would wager the gearbox has a hole in it!
