You can do this through "SYSTEM RESTORE" option provided in-built in WIN XP. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
Then Create Restore Point to backup your files.
When ever you need to restore the file on some crash or virus attack, you can restore the file through the option "Restore My Computer to earlier time". You can do this also in safe mode.
There are also other softwares available for this function, like Tune up Utilities.
