So Boo wasn't persecuted for saving their lives.

Heck takes the knife when he visits the scene because he doesn't want the truth to come out; Boo stabbed Ewell with the kitchen knife. In order to preserve Boo's privacy, Heck wants the story to be that Ewell had the kitchen knife to attack and he fell on it. This is in order to avoid "killing a mockingbird". You have to read between the lines and pull apart the underlying facts in this chapter. Hope you enjoyed the book though!
