Quite basically, the soul in Islam is the spirit inhibiting the host, which is our 'earthly' body. It is the soul who lives on to the afterlife. It is much the same philosophy of the soul existing in other world religions.
Soul also in Quran used for the Angel Gabriel, who conveyed Quran as revealed by God, to prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
