They can (like many animals) 'smell' water from considerable distances away. The water they drink is stored as fat in their hump (or humps). The body absorbs the fat as, and when required.
Contrary to popular belief, a camel's hump DOES NOT hold water! It actually holds fat the camel can use for water.
