Think of a star as a hydrogen bomb that just keeps going and going and going. It generates all kinds of energy. Heat and light happen to be the ones that are useful to us. If you're wondering why it doesn't burn up and stop, it does. It's just so big that it takes it billions of years to run out of fuel and stop.
