Synapses occur at synaptic cleft (or also called as "synaptic gap"). The location of "synaptic cleft" depends on the types of synapses:

  • axo-dendritic synapse : between axons and dendrites
  • axo-somatic synapse : between axons and cell bodies
  • axo-axonic synapse : between axons and axons
  • dendro-denritic syanpse : between dendrites and dendrites

Does the synapse occur between nerve cells?

I wouldn't use the word "occur" since a synapse is a structure, not an event, but yes, it is located between nerve cells, or more specifically, it is where the dendrites of two nerve cells meet.

its known as the synapse. Through the synapse is where impulses travel from brain cell to brain cell.

How are synapses adapted for diffusion?

The synapse releases a chemical that can diffuse across the gap between two neurones. The synapse has a large surface area, which means diffusion of the chemical can occur at a higher rate.
