Measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust
All O2 sensors are threaded into the exhaust system at various points. However, most O2 sensors are threaded into the exhaust system close to the engine end of the exhaust syatem.

Bank 1 is the passenger side of the engine in your Ford Explorer Sensor 1 will be somewhere in the exhaust system , close to the engine , before the exhaust enters the catalytic converter ( upstream )

An exhaust system is comprised of a catalytic converter, resonator, muffler and oxygen sensor. Each of these components work together to dissipate the gases created by the engine.
