Yes, Captain D's gets at least some of its fish from China. More information: Yes, our local Captain D's had to post a sign once the law in Alabama passed that said restaurants must reveal where their fish comes from. For a while, the local Captain D's had a sign that said "our catfish comes from China" but now they will tell you "international waters." Not sure about the regular Captain D's fish, the "country style" or other fish. Yes, they are cheaper but we live in a state that has farm-raised Catfish, and we are also next door to Mississippi that also has catfish farms.
The menu prices for Captain D's Seafood restaurant will vary. A simple fish meal can start at around $5.00 while baked fish meals are a little more.
There is no reason to believe that Captain D's fish is healthier than Long John Silver's. Both offer their main selections as breaded and fried, but both offer healthier choices that are not fried. Captain D's does offer a southern style breading, which may be a bit healthier than the regular breading on Captain D's or Long John Silvers fish.
Captain D's uses pollock from the North Pacific and hoki from New Zealand, Australia and South America. They also use fish from Vietnam. This may vary with locally owned restaurants.
It is Swai, a Vietnamese variety of catfish. It is very tasty, in my opinion. I had eaten Swai prior to having it at Captain D's and I like it. It has a very light texture and flavor. I saw some boxes being unloaded at my local Captain D's recently, and the boxes were clearly labelled Swai fillets.
Captain D's was founded in 1969 in Donelson, Tennessee.
