There are two ways free living single cell organisms digest their food:

  1. internally by engulfing it into vacuoles and digesting it inside the vacuoles
  2. externally by secreting enzymes into their environment and absorbing the resulting nutrients

Multicellular organisms all have a dedicated digestive tract and cells outside this do not have to digest any food.
