Well, there is the example of Job (pronounced Jobe), the subject of the Old Testament Book of Job. God allowed Satan to take everything Job had, including his family and his health, as part of a bet that he would still praise God. In the long run Job ended up with far more than he had before.
However, don't recall ever reading or hearing of that being a Biblical principle that applies to everyone. My guess is that the statement was first made by someone who had a way to profit from people believing it.
