Natural gas is a fossil fuel, formed underground as part of the same processes that created oil and coal. It is mostly methane, and when cleaned of contaminants, it is a valuable energy source because it burns cleanly compared to other fuels. Methane is also produced using animal wastes to create "biogas".

A similarly-used gas, coal gas, was a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and was made by heating coal with steam under pressure. Today it is mostly used to create synthetic liquid fuels.
