I have had the opportunity to try many ports, ranging from 40 year old tawny's to young vintage ports. The best I ever had was a 1963 Fonseca, consumed in 2003, on the occasion of my 40Th birthday. Authentic ports come from the Duoro region of Portugal. Most of the port houses have cavas (wine cellars) in Oporto, Portugal. A forty-year-old tawny would be great. Tawny ports have a different flavor than the vintage ports. Tawnies are aged in oak and so the tannins give them a different flavor. Any 1985 vintage port would also be great. Taylor Fladgate 85 vintage is phenomenal. (The grapes for '85 had a 95% rating.) Other recent vintage years are '92, '97 and 2000. A vintage should be allowed to age lying down for at least 11 years before you drink it.
