[edit] Fertilization and embryogenesisMain articles: Fertilization and Plant embryogenesis

Double fertilization refers to a process in which two sperm cells fertilize two cells in the ovary. The pollen grain adheres to the stigma of the carpel (female reproductive structure) and grows a pollen tube that penetrates the ovum through a tiny pore called a micropyle. Two sperm cells are released into the ovary through this tube. One of the two sperm cells fertilizes the egg cell, forming a diploid zygote or embryo, also called the ovule. The other sperm cell fuses with two haploid polar nuclei in the center of the embryo sac. The resulting cell is triploid (3n). This triploid cell divides through mitosis and forms the endosperm, a nutrient-rich tissue inside the fruit. When seed develops without fertilization, the process is known as apomixis.

Angiosperm flowers have androecium as male reproductive part and gynoecium as female reproductive part. Pollen grains develop inside the anther lobes of stamen of Androecium and embryo sac inside the ovule develops the female gametophyte. Sperms are produced in the pollen grain at the time of its germination and egg apparatus in the embryo sac. At the time of anthesis (flower opening) transfer of pollen to the stigma of the gynoecium takes place. This is called pollination. After pollination the pollen grains germinate at the stigma and send the pollen tubes to the embryo sac. At least one pollen tube enters the ovule to reach near the egg apparatus and it burst to release two sperms (male gametes). One of the male gamete nucleus fuses with the egg nucleus and another male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei of the embryo sac. This is called double fertilization. The embryo develops from the zygote formed by the fusion of egg nucleus with one male gamete nucleus and is nourished by the endosperm developing from triple fusion (two polar and one male gamete nucleus). After ripening of fruit the seed developing from the ovule, is released and it germinates when conditions are suitable to form a new plant. This is how sexual reproduction takes place in angiosperm.

Another method of reproduction is by vegetative means and is very common in Angiosermic plants.
