Sawm is an Arabic word that means fasting. Sawm; per Islam teachings and Quran; is to stop eating, drinking, smoking, and practicing sex from dawn to sunset. It is one of the five Islam pillars to fast during the month of Ramadan (except for some people on certain conditions) and voluntarily to fast other days of the year.
Five pillars of Islam are the Shahada(testifying Faith), Praying ( salaat), almsgiving(zakaat), fasting the month of Ramadan(sawm), and Pilgrimage to makkah(hajj)
They are two of the five pillars of Islam. By Sawm you prevent yourself from eating and drinking to feel hunger and sympathy with poor people who do not have anything to eat so you got motivated to pay zakat to support them.
Going to visit the Mecca makes you understand the story of Muhammad therefore giving you more wisdom about God.
Islam
Fasting Ramadan (Sawm) and performing pilgrimage (Hajj) are the fourth and fifth pillars of the five Islam pillars. Refer to question below.
Siyam/Sawm or Fasting is a required part of Islam and is parted of the Five Pillars of Islam. Fasting is justified both as a Divine Command and because it is supposed to purify the soul and ease contrition.
There are no specific "spillers" in Islam. However, if you meant "pillars" of Islam, they are: Shahada: declaration of faith in one God and the prophet Muhammad. Salah: performing five daily prayers. Zakah: giving a portion of wealth to charity. Sawm: fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. Hajj: pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.
