From the US. Bison are farmed here. The best form of bison I've found is the Bison ribs at Tocabe on 44th Street in Denver. Try it if you're in the area sometime.
North American Bison are a protected in the wild as well commercially bred for meat and hides. In both instances they are heavily managed by the US Forest Service or by their private owners.
There are 1,500 Bison in Custer State Park. Although South Dakota has the most bison of any state, the numbers have fallen due to the demand for bison meat. According to the US Department of Agriculture, there were 38,701 bison in South Dakota in 2007. More recent estimates put the number closer to 27,000 in 2010.

It's not specifically illegal, but it is considered taboo in US culture to eat horse meat. It should also be noted that most horse meat in the US is contaminated from toxic chemicals that are given to horses to keep them healthy, these chemicals never leave the horses system and stay in the meat, sometimes even after cooking. These chemicals can kill a human. Another thing to remember is that it is illegal to use horse meat that has not been inspected and funding for inspections was halted several years ago which means that the vast majority of any horse meat sold in the US is sold illegally.
