Even when your vents are closed, air still is being pulled into the car. The musty smell means you inside cabin air filter needs to be changed. You can gain access to the filter through your glove box.
In any other setting than full recirculation the system mixes inside and outside air. on max cool or full recirc. all vent to the outside are or should be closed.
take it back to a Mazda dealer there is a recall on that, concerning smell/fumes inside cabin it has something to do with crack or break in the fuel system located on the rear wheel well passenger side.
Inside the cabin, a leaky heater core can do that. Outside the cabin, any engine coolant leak that drips onto the hot engine will do that also and if the smell seems to be coming from the exhaust, you may have a cracked head and/or a bad head gasket. Take it to a trusted mechanic to be diagnosed.
